(HOUSTON, TEXAS) April 24, 2008- The Radio Sessions at SugarHill features Howe Gelb (Yep Roc) in its April broadcast. The session was recorded at the SugarHill Recording Studios by staff engineer John Griffin.
Gelb, front man of Tucson, AZ legendary group Giant Sand, is touted as “one of the most resilient and consistently inventive American artists of the last two decades” and has proven his svengali-like ability as a singer/songwriter, guitarist, pianist and vocalist with 20 years of complexly wayward musicianship, countless albums and the as the mastermind of indie label Ow Om under his prolific belt.
Gelb spent the beginning of his musical career shrouded by anonymity and releasing his music through a number of independent labels. He cites giving up college of art “for the crutch of guitar.” His joined his first punk band in ‘78, then Giant Sandworms in 1980 with friend Rainer Ptacek. The first incarnation of Giant Sand underwent a series of line-up changes. Their first official release came with Valley of Rain (1985).
He released a solo album Dreaded Brown Recluse (1991) and his second, Hisser (1998). Among 27 official Giant Sand releases are Ramp (1991), Center of the Universe (1992), Purge & Slouch (1993), Glum (1994), Goods and Services, Backyard Barbecue Broadcast, Volume 1: Official Bootleg Series (1995), and Chore of Enchantment (2000).
Howe has collaborated with the legendary Italian singer dubbed “Il pulcino di Gabbro” Nada, M. Ward, Scoutt Niblett, and John Parish (PJ Harvey) while the rest of Giant Sand’s members spawned a number of side projects like OP8, Calexico and the Friends of Dean Martinez.
Gelb stopped by the studios for a performance and interview with host Rhonda Garner while on tour at the SugarHill Studios sponsored concert series, Live at the World Famous Orange Show! He described the experience as “a healthy combination of invigoration and soul in a studio that allows you to do things that you haven’t done anywhere else. It kind of gets under the skin just enough so you can feel the current. It had a warmth and flow just enough for my liking.”
The Radio Sessions at SugarHill, broadcast monthly on KPFT 90.1 FM, was developed as a means to introduce independent artists to the city’s diverse listening audience by featuring groundbreaking talent in an intimate studio setting. The sessions were recently named “Best Radio Show” in the 2007 Houston Chronicle’s Ultimate Houston guide.
